Mother Stops Daughter From Going to School Over Exam Number 666

A mother in Mombasa, Kenya, has reportedly been arrested after allegedly preventing her daughter from attending a national examination because the pupil’s examination number contained the digits 666.
The incident occurred in Jomvu, Mombasa County, during the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), a national assessment for Grade Six pupils.
According to reports from Kenyan media outlets, the mother objected to her daughter’s examination registration number because she associated 666 with Satan and believed the number was contrary to her Christian religious beliefs.
The situation came to light after the pupil reportedly failed to attend her examination centre for the second day of the assessment. Concerned by her absence, school officials alerted the relevant authorities.
Police officers and children’s officials subsequently visited the family’s home to investigate why the girl had been prevented from attending school.
Upon arriving at the residence, officers reportedly discovered that the pupil had been locked inside a room. Police intervened to secure her release, with reports indicating that officers had to break down the door to reach her.
The girl, who was reportedly dressed in her school uniform, was subsequently escorted to an examination centre to participate in the assessment. Officials reportedly made arrangements to give her an opportunity to complete the examination.
The mother, identified in reports as a 38-year-old woman, allegedly insisted that her daughter should not sit the examination because of the number assigned to her.
The number 666 is associated with the biblical Book of Revelation, where it is described as the number of the beast. Some Christians interpret it as a symbol of evil or Satan, although its interpretation varies among religious scholars and believers.
In this case, the number reportedly appeared as part of the pupil’s examination registration details. Such numbers are administrative identifiers used to distinguish candidates and do not determine their academic performance.
Following the intervention, police reportedly arrested the mother while authorities began investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Details of any formal charges or subsequent court proceedings were not confirmed in the initial reports.
The incident has drawn attention to the potential conflict between religious beliefs and children’s access to education. While parents have a role in guiding their children’s religious upbringing, preventing a child from participating in an important national assessment can have serious consequences for the child’s education.
The intervention by police and children’s officials ensured that the pupil had an opportunity to take the examination rather than miss it because of the disagreement.
The case has also highlighted the importance of addressing concerns about examination procedures through school authorities and education officials, rather than taking actions that could jeopardise a child’s education.
Authorities were expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the girl’s confinement and determine whether further legal action was warranted.
